What is WHOIS?

WHOIS (pronounced "who is") is a protocol for querying databases that store the registered users of a domain name. Every domain registered on the internet has associated registration data including the registrar, creation and expiry dates, and nameservers.

This tool uses RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol), the modern replacement for traditional WHOIS. RDAP provides structured, machine-readable data directly from the authoritative registry, ensuring accuracy.

What Can WHOIS Tell You?

  • Registrar: Which company the domain was registered through (e.g. GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Namecheap).
  • Creation date: When the domain was first registered. Newly created domains are a common phishing indicator.
  • Expiry date: When the registration expires. Lapsed domains can be re-registered by attackers.
  • Nameservers: Which DNS provider the domain uses. Changes to nameservers can indicate a domain takeover.
  • DNSSEC: Whether the domain has signed its DNS records, protecting against DNS spoofing.
  • Abuse contact: Where to report malicious use of the domain.

Why Check WHOIS for Suspicious Domains?

If you have discovered a lookalike or suspicious domain, WHOIS data helps you assess the threat. A domain registered yesterday is far more suspicious than one registered ten years ago. The registrar and nameservers can reveal whether the domain is parked, hosted on bulletproof infrastructure, or genuinely in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I see the domain owner's name?

Since GDPR came into effect in 2018, most registrars redact personal information from public WHOIS data. You will typically see the registrar and technical details but not the individual registrant's name or address.

What is RDAP and how is it different from WHOIS?

RDAP is the modern, standardised replacement for WHOIS. It returns structured JSON data (instead of free-text), supports HTTPS, and is served by the authoritative registry. This tool uses RDAP for accurate, up-to-date results.

Which TLDs are supported?

We support RDAP lookups for .com, .net, .org, .io, .co, .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk, .us, .de, .fr, .nl, .eu, .app, .dev, .com.au, .co.nz, .co.jp, and many more. If a TLD is not supported, you will see a clear message.
